Nov. 23rd - Giselle - Sarasota Opera House
Nov. 23rd - Giselle - Sarasota Opera House

Program Two features the iconic romantic full-length classic, Giselle. Revered as one of the greatest and most faithful productions of this beloved story ballet, Sir Peter Wright's production has been performed across the globe on virtually every continent. The ballet brings to life a story of young love, foolish betrayal, haunting tragedy, and finally redemption through forgiveness. Considered by many as the crowning achievement of the romantic ballet era, Giselle perfectly exemplifies how this art form is a living tradition: taught, preserved, adapted, and handed down from generation to generation.

March 29th - Romeo and Juliet - Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall
March 29th - Romeo and Juliet - Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall

The long-awaited Company premiere of Sir Frederick Ashton's full-length story ballet Romeo and Juliet, bringing the grandeur and passion of Shakespeare's beloved tragedy to the Sarasota stage. Choreographed in 1955 to Sergei Prokofiev's score, the ballet brought great success for the Royal Danish Ballet. Unlike many other productions, Ashton decided to truly focus on the "intimate tragedy of two young people caught in an all-consuming passion" (David Vaughan, Frederick Ashton and his Ballets, 1977). Infused with Ashton's musicality and penchant for heart-fluttering pas de deux, Romeo and Juliet clearly demonstrates Ashton's choreographic genius and his ability to portray the nature of humanity through dance.

April 26th - Movements of Genius accompanied by the Sarasota Orchestra - Sarasota Opera House
April 26th - Movements of Genius accompanied by the Sarasota Orchestra - Sarasota Opera House

Movements features a triple bill by some of the greatest choreographers of the 20th Century. Opening with the stunning Serenade, Balanchine's choreography courses through four movements of Tchaikovsky's Serenade for Strings and leaves audiences mesmerized by its splendor. Robbins' In the Night is comprised of a trio of pas de deux and contemplates romantic love in stages evidenced by three couples: one euphoric, another restrained, and a third tempestuous. Closing the program, Ashton's A Wedding Bouquet returns after nearly a decade. Known as an avant-garde work, its fragmented narrative, originally spoken by Gertrude Stein, features a series of incidents at a provincial wedding in France around the turn of the century where, comically, everything seems to go wrong.
