Historic Trolley Tour of Savannah
Historic Trolley Tour of Savannah

You get it all on this private tour – moss-draped oaks, stately mansions, beautiful squares, expansive riverfront, and over 270 years of history – from the comfort of your nostalgic trolley seat. This narrated tour is so much fun and a few special guests may even hop aboard to speak with us!

Did you know Savannah served as the original seat of government for Georgia when the colony was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe. For almost two decades, Savannah was the capital of Georgia before it moved to Augusta, and eventually, to its current capital, Atlanta.

Green-Meldrim House
Green-Meldrim House

The Green-Meldrim House in Savannah, Georgia, holds great significance as a well-preserved example of Gothic Revival architecture in the American South. This stately mansion was designed by architect John S. Norris and completed in 1853 for cotton merchant Charles Green. The house later became famous for being the headquarters of General William T. Sherman during his occupation of Savannah at the end of the Civil War and witnessed the reading of his famous Special Field Orders No. 15, which later became known as "40 Acres and a Mule."

Visitors to the Green-Meldrim House will be captivated by its exquisite architectural details, including its impressive Gothic arches, intricate ironwork, and stunning interior decorations such as its gas-lit dome. The national historic landmark is filled with period furnishings and artwork, providing a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the 19th-century elite in Savannah.

City Market
City Market

Savannah City Market, situated in the heart of downtown, stands as a vibrant and historically significant hub of commerce, artistic expression, and community interaction. Don’t miss the famous Byrd’s Cookies and their lovely tins of miniature cookies bursting with flavor to bring home to the kids and grandkids!

Centuries ago, Savannahians came to City Market to buy food, services, and other goods. City Market survived two fires and the Civil War and weathered Savannah’s great hurricane of 1896 only to fall into disrepair as the Savannah’s population and commerce spread out across the city. Thanks to Savannah’s powerful preservation movement, City Market is now home to some of the Historic District’s most popular restaurants, shops, and galleries, fulfilling its original purpose of connecting people with the city and each other.

You’ll have Friday afternoon at your leisure to shop in City Market or go explore the Savannah historic district and other attractions.

Tybee Island
Tybee Island

Enjoy a private guided tour of Tybee Island with one of Tybee’s local experts in history and ecology and find out the secrets only the locals can tell! The “salt island” as it’s known is famous for its rich history as it has been home to Native Americans, the French & Spanish, pirates like Blackbeard, and now about 3000 full-time residents. With the advent of the steamship, Tybee became one of the first resort islands in the 1830’s with small beach cottages, and then a tourist mecca upon the building of the Georgia Central Railroad. The island seems untouched by time in many ways, showcasing classic relics of the past including forts, The Tybee Lighthouse, and the Tybee Post Theater.

We will be exploring the island’s history, sights, shopping, and culture on this tour exclusive to our Georgia Tech group with brief stops to meet local entrepreneurs and celebrities.

Following the tour, we’ll enjoy a 3-course lunch off the beaten track at the award-winning North Beach Grill. We recommend the shrimp or scallop pastas as they are truly exquisite!

And then it’s off to explore and do a beach cleanup with Tybee Clean Beach, followed by some shopping at local artisan shops that often get overlooked by tourists but have some of the finest handmade gifts and art on the island.

Tybee Clean Beach
Tybee Clean Beach

Tybee Clean Beach Volunteers is a grass-roots organization made up of local volunteers that sweep Tybee’s beaches free of trash on a regular basis. They are thrilled to have some visitors that share their appreciation for leaving a place better off while visiting it, and will provide our group with all the supplies we need for an easy beach cleanup.

Guests can choose to help do the beach cleanup or simply use that time to stroll on the beach. What’s unique about Tybee Clean Beach is their upcycling program where they make art out of the trash that they collect. The president of the organization looks forward to sharing about this process with our engineers!

Fort Pulaski
Fort Pulaski

Construction on Fort Pulaski started in 1829 following the War of 1812. Fort Pulaski belonged to what is known as the Third System of coastal fortifications, which were characterized by greater structural durability than earlier works. Most of the nearly 30 Third System forts built after 1816 still exist along the Atlantic and the Gulf Coasts.

During the Civil War, new technology proved its superiority over these forts. Using rifled cannons, the U.S. Army compelled the Confederate garrison inside Fort Pulaski to surrender. The siege was a landmark experiment in the history of military science and invention.

Fort Pulaski was the terminus of the Underground Railroad as it became occupied by Union troops. Many enslaved people would make their way to Fort Pulaski, some under the guidance of a former slave, March Haynes. Under the cover of darkness, Haynes would bring hundreds of escaped slaves to the Union command of Fort Pulaski. Once on the island, the newly freed slaves took up residence in the fort's old workers village.

You will have the opportunity to tour Fort Pulaski with a park ranger who is an expert on Civil War history and through this landmark you will discover why the war was truly the pivotal point in American History.

At night after the games and in your free time, you will be just a short walk from River Street and all the historic attractions that Savannah has to offer. After the first game against UGA we think you will be raring and ready to see Tech face off against another opponent and go after the crown as tournament champion. However, we will have a return to the hotel after dinner Saturday if you wish to only attend Friday night’s game and make other plans for Saturday night.
On Friday, you may or may not have the option to watch University of Florida play Tennessee depending on the location and time of the pregame party. Likely it will be at Enmarket Arena during the previous game and you can view as you wish. However, on Saturday night depending on game time, we may offer multiple shuttles to/from the hotel so that you can choose to stay for just one or watch both hockey games.
